The Fun Zone.

Things I have learned from a day at Balboa Island’s Fun Zone:

-  The definition of ‘fun’ is not common to all mankind, just those under 12.
-  No matter how hard you try, you cannot convince a child that the arcade machines are rigged.
-  It will always, always end in tears.
-  When the ferris wheel is traveling at twice the speed of light and the sign says ‘Made in 1985′, you’d probably be best to turn around.
-  Should one be approached by a total stranger who is 1. clearly under the influence and 2. wielding a skateboard, reject all offers to ‘take a photo of all of you’ on your ‘nice camera’.
-  Ice cream and pizza come under ‘healthfood’ when you’re off the mainland.
-  If the kids tell you it was awesome on the way home, it actually was.

  1. Oh yes : ) I think these exact same things every time I take the kids somewhere like that! Carnivals scare me! Laughed my head off about the drunk stranger wanting to shoot the family picture : ) Maybe you could have talked him into taking one of your classes!

  2. Wow – great captures! I loathe going to carnivals, but the joy in the kids’ faces always makes it worth it anyway.

  3. I LOVE the vintage treatment on these, and all the action! A fun set of photos. Oh, and your list at the beginning cracked me up. So funny – and so true.

  4. Although I’m ‘slightly’ older than 12, this still seemed like a lot of fun. Or maybe that’s the kid inside of me speaking? :)

  5. Totally amazing Sheye – I felt like I was there – tears and all!! Can’t wait to do Evolve soon so I can suck your brain for more of your incredible knowledge!! I think I need those eye candy actions – which ones have you used here? Leanne

time warp! Reminds me of Melbourne’s Luna Park when I was a little kid. You couldn’t get a place like that insured here now.

  7. Jayne says:

and fab capture of Ivy’s tears’s!

  8. the pictures of ivy on the ferris wheel are wonderful! Looks like you guys had an ‘awsome’ day. My husband and I love taking the ferry over to Balboa Island and walking around the houses and small shops. Beautiful area.

  9. I spent $20 to go a half revolution on a 1969 ferris wheel *gasp* jumped off faster than the speed of light:) BEAUTIFUL images Sheye, love each and every one xx

Please tell me you didn’t get your camera stolen?

I wish I had known you we’re in California, I could’ve met you for tea and Mady could’ve met Ivy.

    Hope you had fun though.

Lovely pics, especially Ivy’s mood swings!!!! I see Luca has joined the “I’m Mr. Cool,” age with his hat. He’s a tween, my nephew is 11, tweens are unique creatures and by unique I mean it will be crazier than having a couple of toddlers in the house!!!

Oh goodness, one time I actually heard a metal piece of something fall off of that ferris wheel while standing next to it! That was the end of that for us (although I was scared of it even before that happened). Looks like everyone survived nonetheless! Other than the rickety rides, Balboa has become my favorite beach lately. :)

  22. Heather says:
