Simple Nothings on the Other Side.

Well, after a month in California you’d think I’d have exciting travel tales to share, or at least some pretty pictures of sunlight and palm trees.  Um, no.    Don’t get me wrong – we’ve had a wonderful time here but with the many trips we’ve made out in recent years, familiarity sets in and the things that would have once had me squealing with glee or scratching my head in dismay have become more the norm.   I’ve traded “How are you going?” for “How are you doing?”, I fill up the car with “gas” and I’ve stopped saying  ”triple” when relaying our phone number. (I do actually love saying five-five-five..it’s just so, well, American).  Oh, and chips are now french fries and they’re covered in ketchup.   What were once those cute yellow Sesame St fire hydrants are now just regular hydrants.   I no longer hear  the accents like I used to and  I can find my way to the nearest Home Depot. Without the GPS.   See, I’m almost local.  When the exciting becomes more like the every day, it takes work to want to keep recording it.  Or perhaps I’m just back to noticing the things that matter most.

Like watching my children at the start of day.
Seeing their eyes flutter open and the beginnings of a smile and sleepy fists stretching out.
Snuggling together and talking in hush and planning simple nothings.
Laying with three and thinking of four and wishing for different but grateful for this.

Images that won’t make slide night but are more than enough for me,   palm trees or not.

Sheye xx
