Ten? Are you sure?

I’m aghast.  Apparently I have a child who turned ten this week.  If there’s one thing that makes you feel older than your own birthdays ticking over, it’s your childrens.  I distinctly remember a time in my life where I believed people with ten year olds were all grown up. They were responsible, fully fledged adults, cooking dinner, doing school runs, raising real children.  So, how did I get here?   I’m thoroughly perplexed, as well as aghast.

And while we’re making this post all about me, lets focus on the fact that it is,  after all, a celebration of birth and it’s quite clear who did the birthing around here.  I still believe the mother should get all of the adoration, most of the cake and a little Tiffany on the side.   Raise your hands.

Okay, so none of that is happening any time soon so back to the ten year old child who claims he’s mine..Yes, he’s too old but he’s also too clever and too funny and too compassionate as well. Along with thoughtful and helpful and really very brave.  He’s not going to be someone amazing, he already is.

Happy Birthday, my darling Mister Luca.

Some pics from this week…

A little brotherly love:

And a couple from his Laserzone party.  (See, I can endure anything as long as I have a camera in my hand).

Oh, and Mason being Mason.

I feel the SAME way about my kids getting older. Seriously. I used to think that people were “grown” at my age. I don’t feel like a grown up at almost 30.

I swear, I la la LOVE your pictures. It never, ever, ever fails. Each & every single one of them is amazing.

I can’t believe your little man is 10 already Sheye… but what a gorgeous boy he is.

I know all of your children look the same, but those shots of Mason are so like Ava.

    Gorgeous.

The boy is lying. He’s not ten. I remember you hideously unwell pregnant with him at Jen’s wedding. That was NOT 10 and a halfish years ago. He’s clearly delusional. Hmmm I’ll accept five, five at the very most.

ps happy birthing day to you

I know the feeling. My oldest turns 9 this summer, and I’m still trying to figure out just how that could be possible…

At our house his big day is special to both of us, because we also call it my giving birth-day :) He thinks it’s pretty special that his important day is also the day that I became a Mom. So, I hope your little guy had a great birthday, and that you had a wonderful giving birth-day!

  21. Michelle says:

So awesomly adorable those boys!! Happy Birthday to Luca!

  22. Liza says:

Hiya Sheye! I hear you loud n clear w/ the ten year old ‘in da house’!! Where does the time go? I have a ten year old (Ruby) recently complete w/ ‘pigmy titskis’ (& the attitude to match…gotta love those hormones kicking in!!). She’s a great kid 95% of the time, but that other 5% is no fun at all. Just got to keep counting to ten & remember how frustrating a time adoloscent onset was (ALL those years ago). Somehow I just can’t help feeling for my poor Mum now that I’m on ‘that’ side of the fence!! Happy days ahead! Luca looks like he had a ball….he’s delish!!

  23. Sherri P eh says:

Oh Sheye, I so know what you mean about your children being ‘that old already’! In just a blink of an eye! It looks like he had a fabulous celebration, and you captured it so well! Such fun! Now, the Mum thing: I have a friend, an only child raised mostly by a single mother, and one of the many things he learned from her is to give his mother flowers every year on his birthday. He has two daughters, and they always go shopping on their birthdays for a fresh bouquet to present to the woman who brought them into this world. Isn’t that sweet? We should start this tradition everywhere! Sherri XO

  24. Alicia says:

    Great pics!
    Happy birthday to your son!
I can TOTALLY relate to this post.
My oldest child – my son Jordan – will turn 13 next month. Yes, a teenager. I’m having a Very Hard Time with this. Not just with the fact that HE is about to be a teenager, but that I am about to be the MOTHER of a teenager. Egad.

  31. Cherie Shields says:

Oh and you were detesting the thought of a laserzone party *lol* Looks like the boys all had a ball and I trust you got some lovely bokeh shots ;) Told you it wouldn’t be that bad…. I’m with you on the cake and the tiffany … although I have to settle for pandora beads for now. Luca is indeed a special young man, as are all your darlings. I hope you all are all well. Declan has shot up yet again since we last visited … I’m starting to wonder when it all stops. *sigh* 5 is bad enough … I don’t want to think about 10. I’m sure I’ll be beating the girls off with a big stick. He already has a little girlfriend in Prep. He knows all her favourite things and dotes on her … its all unbearably cute.

  32. Amanda says:

    Happy Birthday Kiddo!
