Backward Thinking.

Some days are forward thinking..imagining the future and making plans. Pondering an anticipated event or picturing how tomorrow looks.

Today is not one of those days. Today is a backward thinking day. For whatever reason, much of this day I’ve spent remembering the boys many moons ago. Thinking of a time when they were barely past toddler and able to outsmart and overwhelm me on an hourly basis. They could reduced me to tears with their devilish antics..in fact for a while I referred to Luca as Lucifer. Apart, they were adorable but together in the same room, a recipe for disaster.

Once I had a man visit to inspect our newish lounge that was becoming faulty. As I stood in the doorway saying goodbye, I commented that I had no idea why the frame should be falling apart seeing as I never let my children jump on it. As I finished speaking, the bemused salesman leaned to one side to look over my shoudler, prompting me to turn around where I saw both of them doing just that, leaping with much gusto and delight from one lounge to the other.

Another memorable day after they turned against me, I put both of them in time out. In the same room. Yes, I know. I was still in training myself, remember. When I arrived to escort them out, they’d exacted their revenge by removing Mason’s freshly used diaper and decorating the entire room with the contents. Probably rates as No 1 disaster, even before the 12 broken eggs over the carpet and the pen stuck in the floor fan in my room, spraying black ink all over my brand new white Country Road quilt. (It’s still there).

Not a whole lot has changed except that I’ve got a degree in parenting Team Luca and Mason. I’m proud to say I’ve never muttered “wait till your father gets home” and I’ve actually figured out that bribes and threats work way better than pleading.

Those early years of parenting two spirited boys were trying at best. Even still, today I miss the hi-jinx of their younger years and their smaller arms wrapped around my smaller waist.

Oh just look at those long blonde locks :) This is such a fun post to read, I’m chuckling at the hi-jinks, then even more at your nostalgia for your trying days – isn’t it funny how time changes perspective? If you’re anything like me, I bet you thought your waist was too big at the time and looking back now it looks positively tiny LOL You make me glad that at least if I didn’t get boys, I got Team Tomboys ;)

  8. nicole says:

they are handsome boys. And I can’t help but comment on the exploded pen…sounds weird, but if you spray it with hairspray, then run it through the laundry, it will come out. (my mom had ELEVEN kids…she learned a few things)

Then again, maybe it’s worth keeping the memory. Have a nice day.

  9. kristen says:

Wow the similarities from the boys too photos of Ava are amazing.

Being new to the boy thing Sheye I remember you telling me how much I would love being a Mummy to a boy.

I was like ‘are you sure????’ But you were right and reading this post makes me see the days ahead and you know what? They look mighty lovely.

    Love

Gosh, I can visualise those stories but substitute the names Jack Sam and Will instead of Luca and Mason.
They can infuriate you, and exasperate you, but a little boy is something so very very special.

The love of your boys always shines through your words Sheye. I love reading about them, it makes me think of my boys, and that always makes me smile
Love to you, the boys, Crayton and Ivy xxx Forever in our hearts xxx

OMG! I want to squeeze them…Mason’s little nose and the notorious brown eyes they all display…wowwwwyyy!! …and seriously…black pen all over a white quilt? I think I would dissolved on the floor. :) So fun to see the two of them at a younger age Sheye!

  19. Sarah Jane says:

Oh my goodness! What an amazing mom you are! Part of my is just so amazed at how much little boys can do…but then I am reminded of my own three brothers. Boys will be boys, and if it makes you feel any better, I have had to clean up poop paint off the walls as well!!!!!!

  20. Melinda says:

Laughing out loud. At some point you learn that it’s laugh or cry. And then you start searching for silver linings. “But look how creative they are?” and “Now how many children would have thought to use wet playdoh as wall plaster. And purple play-doh at that?”

Can you tell I speak from experience? And that if I had not learned a coping mechanism I would be in the corner tucked into the fetal position, sucking my thumb?

  21. julie says:

I LOVE that you call Ivy, Ivish. I thought Ivy was short for Ivish. If I had another girl I think it might be on my list! Anna, Eleanore, Olivia, and Ivish….?

Anyway, loved this post. Love to hear all the tricks they were up to. Makes my life seem normal.

Hope you don’t mind that I read your blog. And especially that I comment.

Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dogs Tails…..
They are adorable aren’t they! I remember being scared when I found out Connor was a boy. Could I handle a boy? COuld I handle the cheekiness and escapades.

Oh yes I can! I love him with all my heart and soul. He is the one out of my 3 beautiful cherrubs who will slip his hand in mine and whisper “I love you Mummy” That will cover me with kisses when he walks through the school gate.

Boys are Beautiful! And you have 2 beautiful boys there!!!!

  23. Christine Hall says:

  24. Lindsay says:

Hi. I ran across your blog by chance and though I LOVE the photography, I am particularly touched by your willingness to share the story of your daughter Ava and your thoughts and feelings. I have a 3 1/2 year old little girl right now and am more determined to spend more quality time with her and concern myself with the things that truly matters. Life’s short and you never know when we’re going to get called back home. One thing is for sure. . .Ava is still ALIVE. I know that with all my heart. And you will get a chance to be with her again. I promise!
Thanks for sharing and for being such a good mom and good example to the rest of us to make the best of any situation. May god bless you and your beautiful family.

Man I am just getting used to boys & most especially their ‘treasure’! LOL
Treasure for girls= erasers, paper, feathers, shells & bling!
Treasure for boys= rocks, rocks & bricks!
Wouldn’t swap those dirty sandy kisses for any treasure in the world :o)

  28. Keira says:
